Intramural Volleyball By-Laws
Official League By-Laws
1. Purpose
The Alamogordo Adult Volleyball League (AVL) exists to provide a safe, fun, organized, and
competitive volleyball experience for adults of all skill levels. The league promotes
sportsmanship, teamwork, fitness, and community involvement while encouraging participation in a welcoming environment.
2. Playing Rules
League play will follow the current USA Volleyball (USAV) Official Rules except where
modified by these League By-Laws.
A. Match Format
• Matches will be the best two out of three (3) sets.
• Sets 1 and 2 will be played to 25 points using rally scoring.
• If necessary, the third set will be played to 15 points using rally scoring.
• A team must win a set by two (2) points.
B. Time-Outs
Each team is allowed:
• Two (2) thirty-second time-outs per set.
• Unused time-outs do not carry over to the next set.
C. Substitutions
• Free substitutions are permitted.
• Players should substitute into the same rotational position whenever possible.
• Unlimited substitutions are allowed, provided they do not create an unfair advantage or
unnecessarily delay play.
D. Lineups
Each team must submit its starting lineup before each match.
E. Game Ball
The league will provide the official game ball unless otherwise approved by league management.
F. Ceiling Rule
If the ball contacts the ceiling or overhead obstruction on a team's own side and remains
playable, play will continue. Balls contacting the basketball backboard or equipment directly
above the court remain playable, provided they return to the same side.
G. Libero
The libero is permitted and will follow current USA Volleyball rules.
• The libero must wear a jersey distinctly different in color from teammates.
• Unlimited libero replacements are allowed according to USAV rules.
H. Warm-Ups
Teams may warm up before the scheduled start of the match as directed by league officials.
Warm-ups must not interfere with matches currently in progress.
3. Team Requirements and Forfeits
A. Minimum Players
• Teams may begin a match with four (4) players.
• A team may not continue if fewer than four (4) eligible players remain.
B. Grace Period
A five (5) minute grace period will be allowed after the scheduled start time before a match is declared a forfeit.
C. Forfeits
Teams that repeatedly forfeit may be removed from league competition at the discretion of
league management.
D. Spectators
Players are responsible for the conduct of their spectators.
Children must always remain supervised. Unsafe behavior may result in removal from the
facility.
4. League Competition
Regular Season
League schedules will be determined by the League Director based upon the number of
registered teams.
Playoffs
The top teams, based on regular-season standings, will qualify for the postseason tournament.
Tie breakers will be determined in the following order:
1. Head-to-head results
2. Overall set differential
3. Overall point differential
4. Coin flip if necessary
Tournament
The playoff format will be announced prior to the postseason based on league participation.
5. Equipment and Uniforms
Court Equipment
League management will provide:
• Nets
• Official game balls
• Scorebooks
• Officials
Uniforms
• Teams are encouraged to wear matching shirts.
• Jerseys should display numbers whenever possible.
• Matching uniforms are encouraged but not required during regular-season play.
Shoes
Only clean, non-marking athletic court shoes are permitted.
Jewelry
Jewelry that presents a safety hazard must be removed before play.
6. Player Eligibility
Players must:
• Be at least 18 years of age unless approved and a waiver signed.
• Complete league registration.
• Sign the required liability waiver.
• Pay all applicable league fees before participating.
Players may only compete on one roster unless specifically approved by league management.
Roster additions will be permitted through the deadline established by the League Director.
No roster additions will be allowed after the final regular-season match, unless approved for
exceptional circumstances.
7. Scheduling and Rescheduling
Every effort will be made to complete all scheduled matches.
Games may be postponed due to:
• Facility emergencies
• Unsafe playing conditions
• Weather affecting facility operations
• Other circumstances approved by league management
Rescheduled matches will be announced as soon as possible.
8. Sportsmanship and Conduct
The Alamogordo Adult Volleyball League promotes respect for teammates, opponents, officials,
and spectators.
The following behaviors are prohibited:
• Unsportsmanlike conduct
• Profanity directed toward players or officials
• Fighting or threatening behavior
• Harassment or discrimination
• Abuse of league equipment or facilities
Officials may issue:
• Verbal warnings
• Match disqualification
• Ejection
League management may impose additional disciplinary action, including suspension or removal
from the league.
Players who are ejected must immediately leave the playing area and facility.
9. Protests
Protests are permitted only for:
• Player eligibility
• Misapplication or interpretation of league rules
Judgment calls by officials cannot be protested.
The team captain must notify the referee immediately following the incident before play
resumes.
A written protest must be submitted to the League Director within 24 hours.

10. Awards
League awards may include:
• Tournament Champion
• Sportsmanship Award (optional)
11. League Authority
The League Director has the authority to interpret, modify, and enforce these By-Laws to ensure
fair competition and the safe operation of the Alamogordo Adult Volleyball League.
Situations not specifically addressed in these By-Laws will be resolved using current USA
Volleyball rules and the judgment of the League Director.
League management reserves the right to amend these By-Laws when necessary. Any
amendments will be communicated to all team captains before taking effect.
