Rules & Regulations
General
- Top team on Schedule will be Home team. Home team wears white, plays on side closest to entrance, and serves first.
- Two 45 second timeous allowed per set.
- Attempt to play 3 sets in the 60 minutes scheduled. First two sets to 25 cap of 27, the third to 15 cap of 17.

THE SERVE:
- The ball may be served underhand or overhand.
- Players have 8 seconds to serve.
- Players may retoss during a service attempt
- A served ball may graze the net and drop to the other side for a point.
- A serve must be returned by a bump or set only. No attacking/spiking or blocking a serve.
- A player may not serve more than 5 serves in a row.
- 3rd-4th Grade
- Servers may step 6 feet past the endline.
- If a player serves five in a row and wins the fifth serve, they will then receive the point, but the next serve will be awarded to the opponent.
- If a player's first serve attempt fails to get past the center line, they get a reserve.
- 5th-6th Grade
- Servers may step 5 feet past the endline.
- If a player serves five in a row and wins the fifth serve, they will then receive the point, but the next serve will be awarded to the opponent.
- 7th-8th Grade
- All serves must be from behind the endline.
- If a player serves five in a row and wins the fifth serve, that team will rotate and continue to serve with a new player.
- Rally scoring will be used. There will be a point scored on every serve.
- Sets 1 & 2 will be played to 25 points with a cap at 27 points.
- Set 3 will be played to 15 points with a cap at 17.
- Must win by 2 points.
- Teams will rotate each time they win the serve.
- Players shall rotate in a clockwise manner.
- There shall be 6 players on each side.
- If there are more than 6 players on the team, players will rotate out of the game from the front right position on the court. A player who was previously sitting out will rotate back into the game into the back right position and serve the ball.
- (7th-8th grade only) Each set a team MAY designate a Libero to play in either left back (5) or middle back (6). The libero should wear a contrasting uniform top. The libero must sit out a team's first service of a rotation and must return to their position before the opponents serve that rotation. This libero replacement will be an exception to all players rotating through each position but should still result in equal playing time.
No player may be the libero for more than one set per match.

- Maximum of three (3) hits per side.
- Player may not hit the ball twice in succession (a block is not considered a hit).
- Ball may be played off the net during a volley and on serve.
- A ball touching a boundary line is inbounds.
- A legal hit is contact with the ball by a players’ body, which may include legs, waist, and feet and does not allow the ball to visibly come to a rest.
- If two or more players contact the ball simultaneously, it is considered one play and any players involved may participate in the next hit.
- A player must not block or attack a serve.
- Stepping on or over the line on a serve (7th/8th grade only).
- Failure to serve the ball over the net successfully.
- Hitting the ball illegally (carrying, palming, throwing, etc.).
- Touches of the net with any part of the body while the ball is in play. If the ball is driven into the net with such force that it causes the net to contact an opposing player, no foul will be called, and the ball shall continue to be in play.
- Reaching over the net, to contact a ball on the other side of the net prior to the opposing team third contact.
- Coaches are responsible for their players in the facility before, during and after games and practices. Please instruct your players to go directly to the gym and to remain in the gym until practice or the game is completed. Roaming the building is prohibited.
- Only coaches are allowed in the coaching area. All coaches must remain on their team sideline during the course of the game, except during time-outs.
- MAIN OBJECTIVES: SAFETY, FUN, SPORTSMANSHIP, AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT.
- A referee schedule will be provided before the first game to all coaches/staff by the Palatine Park District.
- If no referee is present, the coaches will be responsible for refereeing the match.
