2023 Spring Basketball
We are almost ready to go 😊 We now have 1174 kids participating on 119 teams. Games Start April 15th and practices start the week of April 10th. Below is some information to help you with the season.
COACHING SELECTIONS
We appreciate parents that take time to coach. With some divisions we do not have enough coaches at the start of the registration process and we have to then contact parents to see if they can help. In other divisions we have more parents volunteer to coach a team then we have teams. We try to give every parent that would like to coach the opportunity to coach their child. Some parents volunteer to coach more than one team which again we are grateful for. Some times parents wishing to coach more than one team may not be able to coach multiple teams as we try to have as many parents as possible have the chance to coach their child. Coaches thank you again for helping with this program.
PRACTICES
Coaches pick the day, time, and location for their practice. This will start on April 1 starting at noon. The 3rd/4th grade teams will pick their practices on Saturday and Sunday April 1st and 2nd so they can have the earlier times since practices are on school nights. The 5th thru 10th grade coaches will pick their times starting on Monday April 3rd at noon. Coaches that are coaching more than one team that practice will be contacted before April 1st to select their times so they can have their practice on the same day. Practices are included in the registration and does not have an additional fee.
UNIFORMS
Uniforms will be ready for pick up at the Gene Fullmer Recreation Center on Saturday April 8th BY THE COACHES any time after 1 PM. I a coach is unable to make it by on Saturday, they can swing by any time at the Gene Fullmer Recreation Center to pick up your uniforms, the front desk staff will help you with this. The cost of the basketball jerseys has gone up from the vendor. Last year I was paying about $10 for a jersey. The price is now $19 a jersey. I am using different jerseys to help keep the cost down for the parents. We will be providing unused/never worn jerseys we have had from past seasons. I will be going to another vendor for our jerseys in the future. The goal is to not up the price of the registration fee due to new cost of jerseys.
OFFICIALS/REFEREES
Every season we lose officials because they could not deal with the way they were treated. Some of these young people could have developed into very good officials. If there is a problem with an official, please contact the site supervisor and they will help. If an official misses a call, please do not yell at them. It is very rough for the referees being that young and having people yelling at them. When it happens, they can lose confidence and are weary to make calls. Imagine if at your work place you had people there judging every move you make and yelling when they think you made an error or not giving the call to their team. It is a lot of pressure when coaches and parents verbally abuse the young officials. We will not tolerate the abuse of the officials, scorekeepers, site supervisors, and our coaches.
SCHEDULES
Schedules will be on the Gene Fullmer Quickscores Web Site. The schedule will be online by April 1st. Games will start on Saturday April15th. Be sure to check the schedule for your location of each game. On some weekends a school may not be available. Some teams may have a bye during the season. This was done so we could get as many kids as we could on teams to play, we have a large waiting list of kids still hoping to get in.
LOCATIONS
For this season we will be using the following venues for games. Please check your schedule closely as some schools will be closed on a weekend.
Gene Fullmer Recreation Center 8015 South 2200 West
Copperview Recreation Center 8446 South Harrison Street (300 West)
Poor Behavior
Poor behavior will not be tolerated. The overall goal is for everyone to have an enjoyable time. People who continually yell at refs, staff, and coaches will be asked to leave. Any aggression towards players, coaches or staff will result in you being asked to leave. Any profanity being used, that person will be asked to leave. Players or coaches using profanity will receive a technical foul and be ejected for the rest of that game. If you are asked to leave and refuse the game will be stopped until that person leaves the gym. We have 99 percent great coaches, parents and players and we thank you for that. The other 1 percent need to act appropriate or plan on being ejected.
There are no organized team pictures for this program.
If your players bring balls or other equipment to the games or practice, please be sure to put a name and phone number on it. We always end up with balls and other items left behind. We call everyone we can to let them know we have their property if we can.
We will not forfeit any games. If a team is short players, we can have kids from another team join in as long as they are registered. The Site Supervisor will help with this. I do not believe that this will occur as we have most teams with a full roster.
Mercy Rule, if any team is leading by 15 points or more, the visible score will not be posted until the scoring margin is back within 10 points. The actual score will continue to be kept correctly on the score sheet at the timekeeper’s table. Once a team is up by more than 20 points the clock will continue to run only stopping for time out or direction of officials.
Site Supervisors have authority to give warnings to parent/coaches/players and if need be, eject them. Coaches if we have an unruly parent and they are asked to leave please help with this process if possible.
At the end of your game please clean your viewing area so the next person will have a clean area. Please do not bring any food or liquids into the gym other than water.
Please remember this is for the kids to come and have fun. Win or lose please be positive with all of the kids. Everyone likes to hear they are doing a great job.
