 SWIM LESSONS 
Group swim lessons are offered year round at JL Sorenson Recreation Center. Learn to swim with our pre-swim and swim schools, and develop competitive swim strokes in our stroke school. All swim instructors are certified through the Star Fish Aquatic Institute.

What level should my child swim at?

This class focuses on trust, comfort and body positions in the water. More advanced swimmers focus on submersion, air recovery and forward movement in the water.
Parents/guardians also learn safety skills to use at all water areas (swimming pool, lakes, rivers, oceans, etc).
A parent, guardian, or someone at least fourteen (14) years old or older MUST be in the water with the child during this class.
• Swim Diaper and plastic pants are required to participate in this classes. 
Pre-Swim School (Ages 3-5)
 Level Max Class Size  Description 
Pre- Level 1  4 Your child is timid around the water and can’t swim at all. They are hesitant to get their face wet and jump in the water. This level focuses on trust and submersion, body position and air recovery in the water.
Pre- Level 2  4 Your child is not afraid of the water! They can float on their front and back without support. They can jump into the water and return to the surface on their own. This level focuses on forward movement and direction change. 
Swim School (Ages 5-18)
 Level Max Class Size  Description 
Level 1
Trust & Submersion
 5 Your child is timid around the water and can’t swim at all. They are hesitant to get their face wet and jump in the water. This level focuses on trust and submersion, body position and air recovery in the water. 
Level 2
Forward Movement & Direction Change
 5 Your child is not afraid of the water! They can float on their front and back without support. They can jump into the water and return to the surface on their own. This level focuses on forward movement and direction change. 
Level 3
Streamlines, Side Breathing, Water Competency
5 Your child can swim under the water or on the surface without support. They can swim freestyle with rotary (side) breathing without support. They have a basic knowledge of treading water. This level focuses on rotary movement and integrated movement. 
Stroke  School (Ages 6-18)
 Level Max Class Size  Description 
Level 4  Freestyle & Backstroke 6 Your child has passed Level 3: Blue/Green. Your child can swim unassisted for 30 feet. They need beginning stroke refinement for freestyle and backstroke. This level teaches freestyle and backstroke. 
Level 5  Butterfly & Breaststroke 6 Your child has passed Level 4: Freestyle & Backstroke (Stroke White/Red). Your child can swim freestyle and backstroke correctly for 30 feet. They need beginning stroke refinement for butterfly and breaststroke. This level teaches butterfly and breaststroke. 
Level 6 Endurance 6 Your child has passed Level 5: Butterfly & Breaststroke (Stroke Yellow/Blue). This level teaches racing dives, endurance in strokes, open turns, flip turns, and other skills needed to prepare your child for recreational (pre-comp) swim team.
