Tournament/League Rules and Eligibility

LYS Tournament/League Playing Rules

 

  1. FREE THROWS: All free throws are played on the release!!!
  2. PLAYER FOULS: Each player will be allowed a total of five (5) fouls before being disqualified.
  3. OVERALL GAME TIME: Game times will be played in four (2) twenty (20) minute halves.  If you see a referee, clock, or other staff cutting time, please contact the Site Director immediately.  LYS takes this act serious.
  4. OVERTIME: The first overtime period will be two (2) minutes in length. The second overtime period will be one (2) minute in length. After two (2) overtimes, the third overtime will be SUDDEN DEATH. There will be one (1) thirty-second (30) timeout in overtime with no carryovers for each team.
  5. TIME OUTS: Teams will be allowed to call two (2) thirty second time-outs per half. Time outs do not carry over after 1st half. 
  6. GAME START TIME: No game will begin before the time listed on the official game schedule.
  7. WARM UP: There will be a minimum of five (5) minute warm-up period between games.
  8. ARRIVAL TIME: All teams are expected to arrive for games AT LEAST 30 minutes prior to schedule start times. A five (5) grace period will be allowed before a forfeit is declared (unless the site director approves more time). If any team is knowingly unable to make their scheduled game, they must notify the Tournament Director in advance.
  9. ROSTERS: Coaches must enter their team roster (Names & Numbers) in the book before each game.
  10. BONUS FREE THROWS: (1 & 1) will begin on the 7th foul in a half & Double Bonus on the 10th team foul. However, Fouls will reset after the half.
  11. FIGHTING WILL NOT be tolerated. Players, coaches, or Parents involved will be removed from tourney. Please be advised that Arizona Law allow referees to call Police and can ask you to leave the facility where the incident happens.
  12. MERCY RULE: If a team is up 20 points or more with three (3) minutes or less to play in regulation, the game will go to a running clock. If the game the lead is cut less than 20 points, the clock will stop again.
  13. BENCH ACCESS: Only two coaches on the bench.  This includes the head coach and assistant Coach.  
  14. LEAGUE ONLY (NOT TOURNAMENTS) If a team is up 20 points or more, they are not allowed to press full court and must get back into a half court defensive set.

 

PLAYER ELIGIBILITY 

All player eligibility & roster challenges must be made prior to the game and must be challenged by the Head Coach Only.  A parents complaint will not be considered or accepted.

  1. LYS Tournaments are Grade based and must meet the age-exception criteria.
  2. A player’s current grade will determine the division they are eligible to play in.
  3. Ineligible athletes will be a violation and will be disqualified from further participating.  (Eligibility may be determined below).
    1. A legible copy of birth certificate and report card is required for verification purposes.
  4. All formal protests will be reviewed by the tournament committee, and their rulings will be final. If the protest is concerning age qualification, the protest must be raised PRIOR to the start of the game in question by the HEAD COACH ONLY.
  5. A player may play in more than one division if they are playing up.  For Example: if the payer is in the 4th grade, he is allowed to play in the 4th & 5th grade or higher.
  6. Any player found in violation of the age rule will be immediately suspended from the rest of the tournament, and the violating team will be given losses to all games that the violating player participated in. 
  7. Any coach, team, or player that is asked to leave the gym (This also includes anyone in their party) by a referee, Security, or Police officer will not get a refund.
BALL SIZE:
  1. BOYS: Ball Size is 28.5 K-6th grade, starting in the 7th grade, players will transition to the 29.5 Ball
  2. GIRLS BALL: 28.5 in all girls divisions.
    • EXCEPTION: Ball size can be agreed upon by both coaches.

2025-2026 AAU Boys' Basketball Eligibility Requirements

This is for the Sept. 1, 2025-to-Aug. 31, 2026 AAU Basketball season

 

Please Note for league play we only allow 1 year hold backs, but we strongly encourage that you play Athletes who have been held back in the correct grade.  The is not a mandatory request, it is just a suggestion.  

 

​7U/1st Grade
An Athlete must turn 7 years old after August 31st 2025 in order play in the 1st grade division or be in the 1st grade for the 2025-2026 School year


8U/2nd Grade

An Athlete must turn 8 years old after August 31st 2025 in order play in the 2nd grade division or be in the 2nd grade for the 2025-2026 School year.

9U/3rd Grade
An Athlete must turn 9 years old after August 31st 2025 in order play in the 3rd grade division or be in the 3rd grade for the 2025-2026 School year.


10U/4th Grade
An Athlete must turn 10 years old after August 31st 2025 in order play in the 4th grade division or be in the 4th grade for the 2025-2026 School year.

 

11U/5th Grade
 An Athlete must turn 11 years old after August 31st 2025 in order play in the 5th grade division or be in the 5th grade for the 2025-2026 School year.

 

12U/6th Grade
 An Athlete must turn 12 years old after August 31st 2025 in order play in the 6th grade division or be in the 6th grade for the 2025-2026 School year.

 

13U/7th Grade 
An Athlete must turn 13 years old after August 31st 2025 in order play in the 7th grade division or be in the 7th grade for the 2025-2026 School year.


14U/8th Grade
An Athlete must turn 14 years old after August 31st 2025 in order play in the 8th grade division or be in the 8th grade for the 2025-2026 School year.

 

15U/9TH GRADE

 An Athlete must turn 15 years old after August 31st 2025 in order play in the 9th grade division or be in the 9th grade for the 2025-2026 School year.

 

16U/10TH GRADE 

An Athlete must turn 16 years old after August 31st 2025 in order play in the 10th grade division or be in the 10th grade for the 2025-2026 School year.

 

17U/11TH GRADE 

 An Athlete must turn 76 years old after August 31st 2025 in order play in the 11th grade division or be in the 11th grade for the 2025-2026 School year.

 

19U/12TH GRADE

 An Athlete must turn 19 years old after August 31st 2025 in order play in the 12th grade division or be in the 12th grade for the 2025-2026 School year.  (12th graders are no longer eligible to play past August 1st 2026)

 

POST GRADS

Players who have graduated from High School but choose to go to prep to complete a Post Grad year are not eligible to play in Varsity Divisions.  

 

Exception:  If a player has proof that they graduate 2026, this player is eligible to play in the Varsity division but can not be older than 21 after August 21st 2025


AGE BASED COMPETITION RULES

7 & Under: An athlete can be no older than 7 on or before August 31, 2026 

8 & Under: An athlete can be no older than 8 on or before August 31, 2026

9 & Under: An athlete can be no older than 9 on or before August 31, 2026

10 & Under: An athlete can be no older than 10 on or before August 31, 2026

11 & Under: An athlete can be no older than 11 on or before August 31, 2026

12 & Under: An athlete can be no older than 12 on or before August 31, 2026 

13 & Under: An athlete can be no older than 13 on or before August 31, 2026

14 & Under: An athlete can be no older than 14 on or before August 31, 2026
