Quick Tip #44 - Banner ads for navigation and random placement
I love it when we add a feature for one purpose, and our innovative clients discover some new way to
put the feature to work for them.
We added banner ads a year ago because so many clients asked us for a way to do fundraising.
But many of you surprised us by using banner ads as navigation buttons that jump to downloadable files
or websites like facebook. And others of you surprised us by selling so many banner ads that you
couldn't even fit them all on one page. To better support you in these two situations, we've added
a few little enhancements to make things work even better.
Same or New window? - Whenever you click on a link, your browser has to either open up a new window
or display the new website in the same window. A true banner ad will always want a new window, while a
navigation button is more likely to want the same window. Now you get to choose which one you want for each ad.
Border or not - By default, each banner ad is displayed with a very thin border around it to separate it
from the background, but now you can choose not to display the border.
Random ordering option - If you have lots of sponsors with banner ads and want to treat them all equally,
you can set some or all of your ads to be randomly ordered. Every time you visit the page, the ads will be
in a new order.
Scrolling - Without banner ads, our left-hand menu is stationary in the upper left corner as you
scroll down a long page, always visible for your convenience. But if you have a long line of banner ads,
a stationary menu may prevent you from ever seeing the lower ads, so we allow the menu to scroll off the top
of the public page to ensure that the public will always be able to see all of the ads from your sponsors.
At the request of a client, we now let you decide whether you want the public menu to be stationary.
