2018 League Meeting and Elections
Parents, Coaches, and Volunteers,
This message is lengthy, but it is very important that all read it in its entirety as it contains extremely important information regarding the future of our league.
The time is approaching for our annual league meeting and elections. This meeting is very important as it is the time for elections as well as it is the best opportunity for you to discuss the 2019 Baseball Season. We will hold the meeting on Sunday, August 19th, at 2:00 pm. We will meet at the Decatur Utilities auditorium room on Central Parkway.
This is a very crucial time in our league as we prepare for the next year. As many of you know we had a fairly large exodus of players that moved to travel ball last year. This took a toll on our league and hurt the league from an operational, scheduling, and financial standpoint. I fear that if this trend continues we will struggle to keep the league operating at a capacity that will support the players as they should be. While I am not advocating against travel ball play, I am advocating against the abandonment of the league that has helped to grow your player by fostering a fun, competitive environment. There are relationships that are built in recreational leagues that carry into school and other areas of life and I don't want to see the league fail from the lack of participation.
Decatur National is set to host the 2019 Ozone State Tournament. At the same time, the Minor B tournament will be at Decatur American and the Minor A tournament will be in Priceville. Imagine a situation where Decatur National hosts this tournament and does not even have enough interest to have enough players to field an Ozone team. This is a time for our league and city to be recognized from leagues across the state, but to make this a worthy tournament it will take work from the board, coaches, and other volunteers from the league. The league as a whole needs support from parents to function and provide the services to the players that help them grow and foster relationships.
With all this being said, it is imperative that you attend the league meeting to voice your opinions, concerns, and ideas. I also implore anyone considering leaving the league to attend the meetings. The other members of the league will appreciate your opinions. Last year our league reduced the number of Saturdays played to give a break and accommodate for some players that want to play Dixie Youth and travel ball as well. There are many leagues that do not play Saturdays at all. Although I am not an advocate for this because it degrades the experience for players that enjoy Saturdays at the ball field, it may be a necessity to keep players in the league. This year it is more important than ever that you attend the meeting as a coach, parent, or otherwise and please consider running for the board. If you have ideas that you think would be beneficial to grow the league, this is the time to voice the opinion as well as throw your hat in to help run the league.
At this meeting, we will elect the new Board for 2019. If you would like to fill a board position please send me an email Luke Howell at email@example.com and state which position you would like to fill. To be put on the ballot, your submission must be sent by 12:00 am, August 5th.
Board positions open for election for 2019 are President, Vice-President, Secretary, Equipment Manager, One (1) Scheduler, One (1) Auxiliary Position. If you have questions about the details and responsibilities of any of these positions please contact Luke Howell by email or phone at (256) 426-1240. I request that you strongly consider joining the board to help shape the league. New ideas and people are welcome and desired to keep the league growing.
From our Local Rule Book:
Rule I.3: Voting members of the National League shall consist of the manager of each team and no more than three (3) coaches from each team and any non-manager or coach who is a member of the Board or serves as a League official; the names of which must be recorded on the League's seniority roster for the prior year.
