Jack, Dan, & Willy-

Just wanted to write you guys a note of thanks on the job that you all are doing umpiring our Leagues, (Co-Ed & Men’s Slow Pitch).  In addition I wanted to point out a concern that needs to be addressed.  I have noticed recently that the ball is landing much more frequently passed the fence.  With that being said: The ball and the compression have not changed, the hitters are the same (with an exception of a few) and the fences did not get moved in. I understand that we have a men’s league now and the type of athletes on the field have increased.  However, I would like you guys to keep on the look out for Illegal bats floating around.  In other words please check the bats periodically.

As you are aware the American Softball Association in its rules via. A court judgment no longer holds the umpire, Local League and its affiliate’s legally responsible if someone were to get hurt by a illegal bat.  In any case the player that uses an illegal bat is held personally responsible for hurting a player, spectator and the like with an illegal bat.  In addition recently (2) players were held leagally liable for over $100,000 in the case between ASA and MichaelRogers and Troy Waterman. In this case the players altered ASA bats and in addition placed ASA approved stamps on their bats…  Not good for them!

Although we are not legally responsible I don’t believe it is in the best interest of WSRPD, our umpires and the like to not make players aware of their legal obligation. This coupled with the fact that I feel at minimum that it is our moral obligation to help educate players and protect any and all participants.  With that being said please see below the rules and regulations pertaining to bats.

Side Note:  In ASA rules as we have talked in the past prohibits any and all players from participating in a game if that said player is under the influence of Alcohol.  If you observe a player drinking between innings and or suspect this occurring that player is to be removed from competition. This is a LEGAl obligation of ASA and its umpires.
Again, thank you for all that you do and as always I am here to help with any and all that you do in the course of the game.  Please contact me with further questions.
